Liverpool’s nightmare start to the season has taken another turn for the worst, with it confirmed that full back Martin Kelly will miss the remainder of the season with a cruciate ligament injury.
The defender went down during the closing stages of Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United on Sunday holding his right knee.
Kelly will now have to undergo surgery that will most likely keep him out for the remainder of the campaign.
Brendan Rodgers had endured a nightmare start to his first campaign as Liverpool manager. He is still awaiting his first league win, and has already lost influential midfielder Lucas Leiva for three months through injury.
He was also left sweating on the fitness of Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini, who also left the field with injuries on Sunday.
A club statement read: ‘[Agger] has suffered a significant bone bruise to the left knee.
‘No ligament damage was sustained but further tests will be carried out before it can be established when he will be able to return to training.’
Kelly confirmed the severity of the injury by tweeting: What I can say is its not the worst injury I’ve had, and for sure ill be fighting for my place next year when I’m back fitter and stronger!’
Rodgers expressed his concern on the injuries suffered to star centre back Daniel Agger, and forward Fabio Borini.

He said: ‘Fabio (Borini) had a badly swollen ankle. Agger’s doesn’t look good, the medics were saying it might be a medial ligament. We’ll see.’
A scan has since revealed Borini’s ankle is badly bruised, but has not been fractured.
